Trick Or Treat Yourself To A Home Refresh

Halloween means different things to different people.  For some, it’s one day out of the year where they are given the opportunity to dress up as their role model or someone that inspires them and take on a different persona.  For others, Halloween gives them the freedom to express aspects of themselves, free from social norms and judgment that they have been afraid to show. It’s the one day some people feel like it’s OK to be different when in reality, it has always been OK to be different and to be your true authentic self in a world that’s in my opinion, different, unique, and a bit crazy anyways.  For me, I think of Halloween as a day where it allows all of us to be kids once again where creativity flows and life is just fun, curious, and playful like it should be all the time.  Remember what it was like to be a kid? What did that feel like? And, how does that relate to your home?  Well, how you feel inside translates to your physical space whether it’s your home or office environment.  Since Halloween is one day out of the year where people feel empowered to be anyone they want to be, why not take that confidence and trick or treat yourself to a home refresh? Here are 5 tips for updating your home on a small or large scale this Halloween.

1. Paint

Paint is easily the most frequent way people choose to give their home a makeover with fresh new colors.  It’s a simple and instant transformation. For a modern twist to Halloween’s orange and black, consider mustard, grey, and eggplant which offer rich and beautiful colors especially paired with other materials such as wood, glass, and metal. On a small scale, you can paint a side table, the back of a bookcase, and picture frames as a DIY project which doesn’t take up a lot of time. Or, on a larger scale, you can paint cabinetry, one entire wall as an accent wall, or the ceiling which can be the most time consuming especially as a DIY project. For larger projects, I definitely recommend hiring professionals.  You’ll save yourself a lot of time, costly mistakes, and stress by hiring experts who will do the job correctly the first time.

 2. Accessories

Accessories is the an affordable way to update your home on a smaller scale.  Whether it’s abstract artwork, patterned pillows, organic bedding, table lamps, a rug, or window treatments, these small updates will make a huge impact in your space.  Sites like Wayfair.com, Joss & Main, West Elm, and CB2 offer stylish accessories in any style that won’t break your budget. Just adding little pops of color as accents will instantly freshen up your home.

3. Plants

If you love nature, plants and flowers is one of the best ways you can connect with mother earth and it’s very affordable too. It helps keep your home fresh, natural, and peaceful.  Incorporate potted plants, succulents, cacti, or a vase of flowers on your kitchen countertops, your fireplace mantel in your living room, or on the windowsills in your bedroom.  They add a pop of color and character to any room and plants just make me smile. Plus, they provide mental and health benefits by purifying the air.  They are living organisms that remove pollutants from the air by absorbing gases (such as carbon dioxide) through their leaves and roots.

4. Appliances

Colorful appliances are all the rage right now and it’s one of the most expensive ways to give your kitchen a trendy makeover.  If you are planning a remodel and want to create a work of art that brings a lot of personality and a bold focal point to your kitchen, a colorful stove or fridge will do the trick.  It definitely adds a pop of color, warmth, and fun to an all white kitchen. If you are tired of stainless steel and want to embrace a color story in your kitchen and have the budget for it, then go for colorful appliances.  Dacor, SMEG, La Cornue, and BlueStar are some brands that sell colorful appliances, but at a hefty price tag. I’m not sure if colorful appliances is something that most people would want in their kitchen for 20 years ,but at least you’ll have a beautiful kitchen that will be THE conversational piece among family and friends!

5. Finishing Materials

Another large scale makeover is replacing your tiles and fittings.  If you are renovating your kitchen or your bathroom, tiles and fittings will make a big transformation.  Especially, patterned tiles which is very popular right now as kitchen backsplashes, laundry room floors, or bathroom walls. Colorful fixtures such as multicolor faucets are also on trend right now. Grohe offers two tone faucets in various colors combined with polished chrome finish.  You can also clad your fireplace surround in patinated steel plate with rivets adding beautiful details and jewelry for the design.

Are you thinking about incorporating some of these ideas in your home refresh? If so, let me know which ones you plan to include! Remember, trends come and go. It’s more important to figure out your budget first, then work on what you can realistically do to spruce up your home that fits within your budget. You don’t have to purchase everything all at once and do a complete transformation. You can take your time in small steps. Plus, it’s important to fill your home with things you love that represent who you are rather than what’s trendy and popular right now.  If you need a designer’s help and touch to transform your space, please schedule a complimentary consultation here.
