10 Alternative Christmas Tree Ideas for Small Spaces

Even though I live in a home with a good amount of space in San Francisco, I still don’t have any room for a traditional Christmas tree. Every corner is too small to fit a tree.

If you find yourself having limited space as I do, you may be wondering how are you going to incorporate a Christmas tree and create your own Christmas wonderland without making your space feel cramped and unlivable. Luckily, there are plenty of alternative ways you can include a Christmas tree. Here are 10 small space Christmas tree ideas to inspire you.

1. Wrapping Paper

This festive tree uses wrapping paper and paper garland to create a small space “wall tree” that is almost as impressive as the real thing. It’s quick and easy to make with small strips of wallpaper taped together to form a loop, topped with a gold rosette. You can use any of your favorite paper materials in solid colors or patterns. I love the rainbow polka-dot paper garland that looks like multi-colored lights and the presents under the tree adds a special touch. Get the full DIY tutorial here.

2. Honeycomb

This honeycomb tree by Studio DIY is a great idea for adding color to your space-saving Christmas tree. You can lay out or sketch out how big you want the tree to be and what colors you want where, so you don’t need to spend much effort and time repositioning everything. Use strong enough adhesive so each honeycomb stays on the wall. Check out the step-by-step tutorial here.

3. Branches

Create your own small rustic Christmas tree using branches and twigs found in nature or your own backyard!  This is a great idea that will take some planning and patience. The tree branches in various sizes (from smallest at the top to longest at the bottom) are hung by jute, wrapped with string lights, and decorated with ornaments.

4. Rosemary

Create a minimalistic simple Christmas tree using fresh greenery such as rosemary in the image below.  The rosemary is glued to cut pieces of wood and attached to the wall. It's a simple DIY idea that is fun, creative, and festive for a modern, minimal touch.  Check out the tutorial here.

5. String

This little tree takes advantage of a trendy art form that is still being used today: String Art. If you create this tree, you can make it any size and design it as simple or as complicated as you like. It works great directly on the wall, on canvas, or on a piece of wood that you frame and hang up. This lets you showcase some of your favorite Christmas ornaments, which is a huge plus for those that have some treasured items and vintage ornaments.

6. Washi Tape

Washi tape is another simple way to create a Christmas tree on the wall.  You can use any color tape or even patterned tape to create your own personalized Christmas tree!  Use paper garland to dress up your tree or use string to hang small and light ornaments.

7. Realistic Foliage

If you aren’t into DIY projects (some people aren’t) and prefer to just purchase a space-saving tree then this simple wall-hanging Christmas tree from Grandin Road is for you. It includes a realistic mix of pine and eucalyptus, crafted from polyester/plastic measuring 40"W x 45"H x 9”D. You can leave it bare or decorate it with ornaments and lights.

8. Lights

I love this tree because it just glows, literally.  You can use lights in any colors that you want and make them any size. You could even hang ornaments on it as you see in the string art tree above. For some, it’s all about the glow and warmth of Christmas lights, so this lets you have the same feeling in a small space. Can you imagine how pretty this is at night?

9. Copper Pipes

Now, this is a creative idea - using copper pipes!  Copper pipes are not expensive and can easily be cut in various lengths, tied together with a string, and hung on the wall for a modern twist to the Christmas tree colors and design.  Hang ornaments, lights, and garlands to add finishing touches and details to your copper tree.

10. Tissue Paper

This tissue paper Christmas tree is easy to create yourself and can be any size you want. The example below shows a 6’ tall tree. You can use different colored tissue paper and hang paper garlands on the tree. Add presents under the wall hanging tree for a special touch. Here is the tutorial with step-by-step instructions.
