With today’s fast paced world, people are really wanting to slow down and connect with mother earth and nature and just relax from all the pressures from the external world. We’ll be seeing more mindful, warm earthy tones for 2019 along with neutrals, shades of blue, and vibrant eccentric colors. Below are predictions from eight paint brands on the interior color that will be hot in 2019, along with tips on how and where to consider using them in your home.
Pantone Living Coral
Living Coral, Pantone’s 2019 color of the year is a bold and vibrant orange pink hue. Described by Pantone as an animated, life-affirming shade of orange with golden undertones that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge, the color welcomes and encourages ” lighthearted activities enabling connection and intimacy. It is a color that represents carefree happiness, symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits—a feeling that people are truly craving in today’s world.” It’s a beautiful color found in nature in the coral reefs of the expansive mysterious ocean. The energetic color can be used anywhere from your living room and bedroom walls to your sofa and side tables to accessories either as a bold statement or as subtle accents.
Benjamin Moore Metropolitan
Compared to 2018 color of the year, Caliente, a fiery bold red, Benjamin Moore selected a more subdued hue for their 2019 Color of the Year – Metropolitan AF-690. It is a trendy gray with cool undertones. “Comforting, composed and effortlessly sophisticated, Metropolitan exudes beauty and balance,” said O’Neill, Benjamin Moore Director of Strategic Design Intelligence. “It’s a color in the neutral spectrum that references a contemplative state of mind and design. This understated yet glamorous gray creates a soothing, impactful common ground.” Since Metropolitan is a neutral color, it can be used anywhere from walls to ceiling, furniture, accessories, cabinetry, floors, and exterior. It is the perfect foreground color for any space and many people feel very comfortable with using neutrals as the primary color in their home or office.
Sherwin Williams Cavern Clay
Cavern Clay SW 7701, Sherwin Williams 2019 color of the year, is described as a “warm terracotta color with ancient, elemental roots, giving nod to mid-century modern style, but with the soul of the American Southwest, which together create the desert modern aesthetic.” Cavern Clay, embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair. This is a beautiful, warm, and earthly hue that is a great way to connect with nature and bring the outdoors in. Use it as a bold statement in your bedroom or living room walls or as a backdrop for a kitchen or dining room. Balance the hue with wood furniture such as a wood coffee table or wood dining table, leather accents, and plants to really connect with nature and mother earth.
PPG Night Watch
Night Watch (PPG1145-7), PPG’s 2019 color of the year is a rich, luxurious, and classic shade of green which emulate the feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature. “The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever. This deep rich green is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature” explains Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. Use this color boldly and dramatically on your walls, ceiling, or cabinetry, or subtly as accents from bedding to drapery to rugs. Combine with wood elements which really creates a sense of oneness and connection with nature.
Dunn-Edwards Spice of Life
Dunn-Edwards 2019 Color of the Year – Spice of Life DET 439 is a dark, browned, fire brick red with orange undertones. “Spice of Life is an outgoing, confident hue that adds drama and stimulates the senses,” explained McLean, color expert and stylist for Dunn-Edwards. “It’s a celebration of what makes life interesting and exciting. Spice of Life makes a bold statement with a melding of diverse and global cultural influences.” McLean selected Spice of Life after extensive research on color trends in everything from art, hospitality, and fashion to global events and local street culture. “In these always-connected times, we start to crave real, genuine connections with the earth and with each other,” said McLean. This warm, rich, and deep earthly tone is perfect for creating an intimate setting in any space. Use this color in your living room and position 4 chairs in a circle with a coffee table in the middle to create a cozy, welcoming, and inviting sitting area.
Blueprint S470-5 is Behr’s 2019 Color of the Year. This denim blue hue (drawing a parallel to blue jeans), is that perfect middle of the road blue denim color- not too dark, not too light, slightly worn to keep it comfortable, but with enough color to be easily dressed up. Described by Behr as “warmer than denim and softer than navy,” Blueprint promises to deliver “authenticity, confidence and timelessness” in both the interior and exterior of the home. “This universally appealing hue provides a steady stream of positivity and is an instant classic for years to come.” Use this color on your kitchen cabinets and contrast it against your island with a navy blue. Or swap out your neutral sofa with a sofa in a denim blue for relaxation, comfort, and a pop of color against a neutral backdrop.
Farrow & Ball De Nimes
Farrow & Ball have also included shades of blue to their 2019 color palette. Farrow & Ball describes De Nimes as a quietly elegant blue that feels wonderfully down to earth. The exact shade is rooted in a regency palette but is inspired by the cloth of everyday workwear made in the French city Nîmes. Like denim, its blue hue is ultimately fashionable and yet always feels grounded according to the description on their website. The color could be used on anything from a kitchen island to a sun room to your exterior. There’s a sense of peace and calm that is visually appealing in De Nimes.
Valspar Twilight Mist
Valspar introduced 12 colors for their 2019 color palette, one of which is Twilight Mist. Anticipating uncharted territory ahead, Twilight Mist, a light, clean soft shade of purple mimics the edge of artificial light that is both comforting and strangely familiar,” says Senior Color Designer Kim. It’s reminiscent of a soft lilac and creates a relaxing and soothing look and feel to any space. Use this color in your living room or bedroom and contrast it with dark rich espresso wood elements for a clean, simple, and contemporary aesthetic to your space.
